My Approach to Therapy
I recognize that you have strengths and potential in addition to the problems that brought you to therapy. I take a person-centered approach, addressing your issues as they arise and allowing our work together to proceed at a pace that feels right for you. In the context of a collaborative partnership, I'll help you connect with your inner resources and wisdom so that you can make positive, lasting changes in your life.
My theoretical framework, which organizes how I understand the mind, is influenced by Buddhist psychology and Existential psychology. These theoretical perspectives recognize that we have the potential within ourselves to heal and find peace in our lives. They beautifully articulate the ways our unresolved issues and emotional wounding make themselves known to us in our present-moment experience.
I draw on techniques from a variety of disciplines, depending on what fits your needs. For example, cognitive-behavioral techniques are highly effective for managing anxiety, and mindfulness techniques can help you slow down and see more clearly what makes certain situations challenging or difficult.
My experience as a meditator has taught me how to pay close attention and has enhanced my ability to help clients understand more clearly their experience of being in the world. I am especially interested in the ways that the relationship between a therapist and client mirrors the relationship we take with ourselves when we meditate.
The First Session
The best way to know if I'm the right therapist for you is for us to meet face-to-face. The first session is a chance for you to tell me what brings you to therapy and for me to explain how I would see us working together. It's an opportunity for you to get a sense of what it might be like to work with me and to ask me any questions you may have about the therapy process. It's my intention that this first session will give you the information you need to make an informed choice about your therapy.
What to Expect
You and I will work together to explore your experience of being in the world, finding the places where you feel stuck and discovering ways for you to live more authentically. We'll develop strategies for managing anxiety and other disruptive symptoms and explore the unresolved issues underlying them so that you can heal old emotional wounds and reclaim aspects of yourself that have become lost.
