Therapy for Challenging Times
Therapy provides support, a place to share all the thoughts that are bouncing around your head with an attentive listener. Not only is this helpful - you get to vent and in the process gain perspective - but it also creates a safe container to say out loud the things that you can’t say to a friend.
These are challenging times - change is happening so quickly that it becomes overwhelming to keep track of it all or find a way to respond. News stories carry alarming headlines that not only get our attention, they put us into a state of hypervigilance, compelling us to keep checking to see what’s changed since the last time we scrolled our news apps. In these moments, we can go into fight/flight/freeze: shutting down in despair, numbing ourselves with substances, or getting into heated arguments with our closest friends and family. Fear and anger create a spiral that’s hard to stop.
We humans are social animals. We are designed to live in groups and to rely on our groups for support and friendship. Fear divides us, making us loathe our neighbors who hold different beliefs. In times like these, we need our people the most, yet it’s hard to have these conversations with others who are also struggling.
Therapy provides a safe space, regardless of your political views. I know that we’re all doing the best we can to cope with the challenges we face. Whether you’re overwhelmed with the news, dealing with conflicts in your family or workplace, coping with illness, or wanting to work through implicit biases that go against your personal values, I will listen without judgement and help you gain perspective and find ways to cope and respond. We’re all in this together.
